Intro sound project: Due 10/30

Create a 30 sec. – 1 min. soundscape and a storyboard accompanies a single image of your choice. You should have the rights to the image and cite its origin. The sound should amplify some aspect of the image - either reinforcing its obvious characteristics/meaning, or contradicting them. Do not use music.

Due 10/16 – 3 paragraphs describing three different ideas/approaches And examples of sounds that might be used in each case.

Where can you find sounds?

Using Audacity to create sound mixes

  • Audacity for sound mixing
  • Combines multiple audio tracks; allows for mixing, effects, time shifts
  • Most important - always STOP before making changes
  • Many controls contained in Project menu
  • Can build up layers by selecting Project>Import Audio
  • With starburst selected, click on location to create keyframe for fading, changing amplitude
  • Set preferences for input: 44.1 15 bit stereo
  • Export to .wav stereo for import into Premiere for final edit

Using After Effects:

Review of masks

  • Create a mask by selecting a layer and using the pen tool to create a closed shape
  • This shape can be animated by keyframing the position of the points or by moving the entire shape with transformations
  • The shape can be applied to another layer via copy/cut and paste
  • You can invert the mask to key into either the outside or the inside
  • Whatever is in the next layer down (underneath) will be inserted into the dark areas of the mask

Parenting

  • In a parenting relationship, the child inherits all the characteristics of the parent in terms of transformations (global), but can also have its own transformations (local)
  • Create a parenting relationship by selecting the parent layer’s name in the drop down menu next to the child layer name, or by clicking on the spiral in the child layer and dragging to the name of the parent.

Text basics and animation along a path

  • Activate the text tool in the top menu.
  • Type in something. This creates a new layer
  • with the text layer highlighted, create a path with the pen tool
  • this will make a layer effect called Mask 1
  • under text/path options/path, select Mask 1 from the drop down menu
  • keyframe the values under First Margin to create an animation of text moving along a path
  • play with the values under Path
