Masks/mattes/transparency

Paths are splines, either Bezier or linear

A path itself has no visual appearance in rendered output; it is essentially a collection of information about how to place or modify other visual elements.

Splines can be graphic or temporal Linear is a straight line between two points Bezier requires three points and describes a curve whose shape is defined by the position of the handles and/or the type of Bezier curve

Paths are either open or closed

Closed paths can be used as mattes or paths for animating text. Open paths will not create a matte but can be used for animating text.

Transparency in AE

Masks, mattes, keys, alpha channels

An alpha channel provides a way to store images and their transparency information in a single file

white indicates complete opacity, black indicates complete transparency, and shades of gray indicate partial transparency.

Transparency inherent in the image:

A matte is a layer (or any of its channels) that defines the transparent areas of that layer or another layer. White defines opaque areas, and black defines transparent areas.

file formats that can include an alpha channel Photoshop, ElectricImage, Adobe Flash Video (FLV), TGA, TIFF, EPS, PDF, and Adobe Illustrator.

With straight (or unmatted) channels, transparency information is stored only in the alpha channel, not in any of the visible color channels. With straight channels, the effects of transparency aren’t visible until the image is displayed in an application that supports straight channels.

With premultiplied (or matted) channels, transparency information is stored in the alpha channel and also in the visible RGB channels,

Not inherent in the image: derived from color or luminance info

Keying is defining transparency by a particular color value (with a color key or chroma key) or brightness value (with a luminance key) The technique of keying out a background of a consistent color is often called bluescreening or greenscreening,

Difference keying defines transparency with respect to a particular baseline background image

Not inherent in the image: created in AE with primitives or by drawing

Mask (created in AE) relies on the concept of a path. A path consists of segments and vertices.

Paths drawn with the Pen tool are either manual Bezier paths or RotoBezier paths. The main difference between RotoBezier and manual Bezier paths is that direction lines are calculated automatically for RotoBezier paths, making them easier and faster to draw.

Points are interactive As a path exits a vertex, the angle and length of that vertex’s outgoing direction line determine the path. As the path approaches the next vertex, the path is less influenced by the previous vertex’s direction line and more influenced by the next vertex’s incoming direction line.

Paths can have two kinds of vertices: corner points and smooth points.
