Film: Conventional Space

-Editing helps to convey space and plays an important role in a story.

-The 180 degree rule: If there are two characters in a scene, the camera stays on one side of the action to help the audience reference what is taking place in the scene.

-An establishing shot helps us to reference where the action is taking place.

-Once the place of action is established then cutting helps to emphasize certain things in a plot such as characters or conflict.

-Shot scale can change to incorporate entering characters.

-Shot/reverse shot: helps to convey the exchange of dialogue between characters.

-Close up insert: the camera might cut into a dramatic piece to emphasize something important in a scene. It can show what a character sees or something the characters are unaware of.

-Directional vectors of space: lines along which action is viewed. -Eye line match: cuts along the character’s line of vision -Point of view shot: along the character’s eye line and shows the character’s actual distance from what is in the shot.

-Camera movement can mimic what the characters attention is focusing on
