Questions from readings

  • what points does the reading make about notions of private and public?
  • How does the hypocrisy of government support for privileged classes and exclusion of the homeless connect with the Occupy movement?
  • Isn’t the very notion of democracy called into question, with its emphasis on individual rights (and presumed neglect of communal ones)
  • Who decides what a work of art means? Isn’t the artist’s intention the most important?
  • Who should choose works of public art?
  • Does public art (or any art for that matter) have a limited life span?
  • Does public art have an obligation to address contemporary issues of importance?
  • The city formerly known as Cambridge – brilliant in its choice of one mechanism of acknowledgment of history and importance and meaning creation to re-investigate and reinvest public space with personal and community significance – questions who is in control
  • What about the idea of redefining something as a work of art (eg. the Boston Dig)?
