situationists -

  • creative disruption of everyday life (grafitti )
  • started in France in 1957, against rigid and static ideologies like Marxism. *Wanted to be living, responsive.
  • detournement (subverting elements of popular culture)
  • The Situationists, or Situs, were the first revolutionary group to analyze capitalism in its current consumerist form.
  • Anti-capitalist

Clerks [2]

  • bad attitude
  • master of own destiny, but not really – bound by convention, “title”
  • acting out is a form of rebellion, since revolution is not possible
  • revolution: bolshevik, cruel supression, hunger, 12 hr. work day
  • resistance: cultural critique, disruption
  • clerks – doing things slowly, screwing up, being rude, undermining the existence of the store, alienating customers – exerting power in whatever small ways are possible
