Projects and Assignments policies

ONE LATE ASSIGNMENT FOR THE SEMESTER IS ACCEPTABLE - THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE THE MID TERM EXHIBIT OR THE FINAL PROJECT

OTHERWISE, ASSIGNMENTS MORE THAN ONE WEEK LATE WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED

LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE LOWERED ONE LETTER GRADE

IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED ON-TIME, ASSIGNMENTS AND PROJECTS MUST BE POSTED TO THE WEBSITE

Assignment 1

Due in class beginning week 2. Asn. 1 (taken collectively) Each week (excepting the last 3 weeks), create a google map entry identifying a piece of public art, add it to the map, document and comment on it. Categorize each work according to the following schema:

  • 1. objects placed in the environment
    • a. sponsored privately
    • b. sponsored publicly
  • 2. modifications to the environment
    • a. official, sanctioned, sponsored
    • b. unofficial, renegade, guerilla
  • 3. virtual spaces
  • 4. shared spaces

In addition, comment on the style of the work: contemporary/abstract; traditional/figurative; war memorial; temporal information (when created, permanent or temporary).

Assignment 2

Asn. 2 (taken collectively) - due Weeks 3,6, 9 and 15,

Write a blog entry of one paragraph in length that defines public art, influenced by lecture/discussion, readings, and your findings in identifying public art for the google map. Due in class at the beginning of each class.

Grads: Due May 17, 5 pm - a final paper of 3 pp. summarizing your ideas about public art over the semester, and relating them to your own work, posted to the blog.

Assignment 3

Due April 27. Presentation: Choose by lottery one of the 13 ways of Thos. McEvilley’s essay about understanding art, and do a short presentation using a work of public art as an illustration/subject. Post one or more images to your class site and several explanatory bullet points, and do a 5-7 min. presentation in class. [[1]]

Project 1

Due Feb. 10: Design a billboard (and show it in context) that expresses an opinion and attempts to persuade on a subject of your choice such as: war, the environment, alternative energy, poverty, homelessness, AIDS, etc.

Project 2

Due April 21. War memorials are part of the visual landscape. Design a war memorial or a modification to an existing one. Create a visualization of the work and an explanation/artist’s statement about it. Consider the relationship of the hero or representative to the masses, the representation vs. the symbol, the lasting vs. the ephemeral.

Project 3

Due May12. Design a motif (or series) (could be text, high contrast image, continuous tone/color image) to be projected on the sidewalk in front of the 1000 building, keeping in mind the context: public space, space of passage and the timing (week of Manifest, time of transition). This might also be a laser or hand-cut stencil, or a video. There will be loudspeakers attached to the glass of the front lobby that will project sound both inside and out. The Illustrator file that will act as a template for either vector drawings or continuous tone images is in Classfolders/PublicArt/lasercircletemplate.ai. The image(s) will originate from a projector mounted on the ceiling of lobby, and the bottom of the projection will be just outside the exterior wall, running parallel to the wall. You may want to consider this orientation in making your images for either either projector/medium.

Project 4

Final exhibit, Facade of the Hyde Park Art Center, Two evenings April 21, 22 (T & W), 6-10 PM

Design and realize a work of public art for presentation on the facade system [[2]] of the Hyde Park Art Center. This may be an individual or a collaborative work.

due March 17: Rough edit

due March 31: Final piece, not subject to further tweaking.
