Projects and Assignments policies

ONE LATE ASSIGNMENT (of one week) FOR THE SEMESTER IS ACCEPTABLE - THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE THE VITRINE EXHIBIT OR THE FINAL AR PROJECT

OTHERWISE, ASSIGNMENTS MORE THAN ONE WEEK LATE WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED

LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE LOWERED ONE LETTER GRADE

IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED ON-TIME, ASSIGNMENTS AND PROJECTS MUST BE POSTED TO THE WEBSITE

Assignment 1

Due in class for presentation and discussion on 2/12, 2/26, 3/5, 3/12, 4/16, 4/23, 4/30, 5/7. Asn. 1 Google Map entries Each week (excepting the last 3 weeks), create a google map entry identifying a piece of public art, add it to the map, document and comment on it. Categorize each work according to the following schema:

  • 1. title, date
  • 2. objects placed in the environment
    • a. sponsored privately
    • b. sponsored publicly
  • 3. modifications to the environment
    • a. official, sanctioned, sponsored (by whom)
    • b. unofficial, renegade, guerilla
  • 4. description
  • 5. relationship to the public
  • 6. its world view

due week 2 (2/5) Design a modification of existing monument, memorial or piece of public art.

Assignment 3

Due Feb. 19 Project 1: QR Mobile Tagging Create three signs with a QR code that can be read by a mobile phone and references a URL or a text piece that you have created. Take a photo of the 3 locations. Please do not locate it permanently. Refer to Chgo. City ordinance on signage. [[1]] CHAPTER 10-24 -SIGNS EXTENDING OVER AND UPON CERTAIN PUBLIC PROPERTY These should be in a public place (ie, not a private residence, school, or corporate building).

due April 2, installation on April 8th Site-sensitive piece using rear-projected video for the windows of (across from 24 W. Randolph)

Assignment 5

Due 5/14 Augmented Reality work – piece of public art, Artist interventions in public space were formerly relegated to one of two strategies: officially approved and funded work, and guerilla interventions. AR provides an opportunity for individual interpretations of public space to become available to a broad audience and makes it possible for alternative histories, political statements, and artistic mediations to be widely seen and heard. With these ideas in mind, create a piece that “tags” one or more locations in Chicago’s loop.

Assignment 6

HPAC piece, due April 27, final screening May 4-16

Create a work, collaborative or individual, that uses the Dataton Watchout software and destined for the HPAC façade display system. This work should be interactive and may use (or create a variation on) the input system worked out by/for the class using PD/GEM.

due April 27: statement describing its intention, why it should be considered public art. Statement will be part of the program notes and should include title of work, name of creators, length, statement of purpose/description
