Projects and Assignments policies

ONE LATE ASSIGNMENT FOR THE SEMESTER IS ACCEPTABLE - THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE THE MID TERM EXHIBIT OR THE FINAL PROJECT

OTHERWISE, ASSIGNMENTS MORE THAN ONE WEEK LATE WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED

LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE LOWERED ONE LETTER GRADE

IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED ON-TIME, ASSIGNMENTS AND PROJECTS MUST BE POSTED TO THE WEBSITE

Assignment 1

Due in class beginning week 2. Asn. 1 (taken collectively) Each week (excepting the last 3 weeks), create a google map entry identifying a piece of public art, add it to the map, document and comment on it. Categorize each work according to the following schema:

  • 1. objects placed in the environment
    • a. sponsored privately
    • b. sponsored publicly
  • 2. modifications to the environment
    • a. official, sanctioned, sponsored
    • b. unofficial, renegade, guerilla
  • 3. virtual spaces
  • 4. shared spaces

In addition, comment on the world view of the work and give temporal information (when created, permanent or temporary).

Assignment 2

Asn. 2 (taken collectively) - Due in class Weeks 3,6, 9 and 15, at the beginning of each class.

Write a blog entry of one paragraph in length that defines public art, influenced by lecture/discussion, readings, and your findings in identifying public art for the google map.

Grads: Due May 17, 5 pm - a final paper of 3 pp. summarizing your ideas about public art over the semester, and relating them to your own work, posted to the blog.

Asn. 3 a, due week 3 in class create a composition with "geos" controlled by oscillators, line ramps or other automata to show in class

As. 3 b, due week 4 in class add recursion to your assignment 3a

Asn. 3 c., due week 5 in class Create a patch that uses your surfing mouse interactions to build a visual work


Project 1

Due week 4 Project 1: Mobile Tagging Create a sign with a bar code or QR code that can be read by a mobile phone and references a URL or a text piece that you have created. Take a photo of at least 3 places where you have located it. Please do not locate it permanently. Refer to Chgo. City ordinance on signage. “CHAPTER 10-24 -SIGNS EXTENDING OVER AND UPON CERTAIN PUBLIC PROPERTY” These should be in a public place (ie, not a private residence, school, or corporate building).

Project 2

Due week 6: Sidewalk display Sidewalk projections typically advertise businesses immediately adjacent to the sidewalk. Yours will address a social issue for display in front of the 916 building. Create a still graphic, OR video of no more than 3 min., OR circular disc (specs to follow) addressing a social issue for display in front of the 916 building.

Project 3

Final exhibit, Facade of the Hyde Park Art Center, Two evenings April 21, 22 (T & W), 6-10 PM

HPAC piece, due April 20, final screening May 7-16, 6-10 Create a work, collaborative or individual, that uses the Dataton Watchout software and destined for the HPAC façade display system. This work should by preference be interactive and may use (or create a variation on) the input system worked out by/for the class using PD/GEM.

due March 17: Rough edit

due March 31: Final piece, not subject to further tweaking.

due April 14: statement describing its intention, why it should be considered public art, as well as a pre-visualization of the work. Statement will be part of the program notes and should include title of work, name of creators, length, statement of purpose/description
