Projects and Assignments policies

ONE LATE ASSIGNMENT FOR THE SEMESTER IS ACCEPTABLE - THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE THE MID TERM EXHIBIT OR THE FINAL PROJECT

OTHERWISE, ASSIGNMENTS MORE THAN ONE WEEK LATE WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED

LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE LOWERED ONE LETTER GRADE

IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED ON-TIME, ASSIGNMENTS AND PROJECTS MUST BE POSTED TO THE WEBSITE

Assignment 1

Due Feb. 5: Mind map on what differentiates one space from another. (show the relationship and different levels of “sacredness” or “personalness” of the spaces you know/frequent)

Assignment 2

Due Feb. 24: “Spatial forms are social structures” Analyze some public or private space that you inhabit or pass through regularly with this phrase in mind. How do you use this space? How does its character (size, shape, architectural nature) influence what you do there, how you and other co-habitants relate? Relate an incident in your own or someone else’s experience of the space to characterize how the space influences the actions and interactions of those who use it. Discuss size, shape, lighting, sound, materials (such as wood, metal, linoleum, etc.) 1 pg. and class presentation.

Assignment 3

Due March 17. Presentation: Choose by lottery one of the 13 ways of Thos. McEvilley’s essay about understanding art, and do a short presentation using a work of public art as an illustration/subject. Post one or more images to your class site and several explanatory bullet points, and do a 5-7 min. presentation in class. [[1]]

Assignment 4

Due April 21. Choose two works of public art that illustrate one or more of the dichotomies suggested below (or some others that you may conceive), and do a 5-10 minute presentation using at least one (digital) image (and/or sound file) of each work.

  • Horizontal – vertical
  • Representational – abstract
  • Commemorative – conceptual
  • Corporate/Governmental – community
  • Self contained - interactive
  • Official – underground/renegade
  • Lasting - ephemeral

Include a discussion of its historical, political, social, and physical context and siting.

Project 1

Due Feb. 10: Design a billboard (and show it in context) that expresses an opinion and attempts to persuade on a subject of your choice such as: war, the environment, alternative energy, poverty, homelessness, AIDS, etc.

Project 2

Due April 14. War memorials are part of the visual landscape. Design a war memorial or a modification to an existing one. Create a visualization of the work and an explanation/artist’s statement about it. Consider the relationship of the hero or representative to the masses, the representation vs. the symbol, the lasting vs. the ephemeral.

Project 3

Due May 12. Design a motif (could be text, high contrast image, continuous tone/color image) to be projected on the sidewalk in front of the 1000 building, keeping in mind the context: public space, space of passage, and perhaps completion of one journey and start of another. Equipment used will be found on this website: [[2]] The technical specifications for the image are:

We may also be able to use video projectors to project onto the sidewalk, and we should be able to incorporate sound.
