Finding Books and Media

ILLINET Online (IO) is an online catalog for materials at Columbia as well as 44 other academic libraries in Illinois. IO computers are located throughout the Library, and IO may be searched via the campus network or through a dial-up modem connection. The dial access number is 1-877-DIAL-ILL (1-877-342-5455).

Requests for Purchase

Requests for purchase of Library materials for the collections may be sent to Library Acquisitions or your department's Liaison Librarian, Shirley Bennett, ext. 7369.

Course Reserves

Materials placed on Reserve for classes by instructors are housed at the Circulation Desk on the first floor of the Library. Each semester, faculty are asked to notify the Library which materials are to be placed on Reserve. “Library Reserve Materials List Forms” and guidelines for placing materials on Reserve are available in the Library. For information and assistance, call Larry Oberc, ext. 7157.

Library Instruction

To schedule library instruction for your classes or to discuss the specific library instruction you want for your course, call the Reference Desk, ext. 7900.

Teaching Assistants

Faculty may authorize teaching assistants or departmental staff to check out Library materials on their behalf. Assistants must be registered each semester by completing an authorization form. You are responsible for the return of materials borrowed in your name.

Circulation Policies

Circulating books may be checked out for four weeks. Audio recordings and scores circulate for one week. Most materials can be renewed unless another patron requests them for use. Short-term loans may be arranged for faculty who need to use non-circulating materials, such as reference books and periodicals, in their classroom. Calling the Circulation Desk, ext.7312 may renew materials

Audiovisual Materials

Faculty for classroom use for up to 24 hours at the fifth floor Audiovisual Desk may check out films, videotapes, and videodiscs. These materials do not circulate outside of the Library to students. Listening and viewing equipment are located on the fifth floor of the Library.

Advance reservations for audiovisual materials are strongly recommended to ensure availability when needed for your class. Reservation requests should be made at least three days in advance of need. “Audiovisual Reservation Request Forms” are available in the Library. Reserved materials may be picked up at the Circulation Desk on the first floor.

Audiovisual equipment for in-classroom use is arranged by contacting the Office of Instructional Media Services, ext. 7126. This office is not part of the Library.

Slides

The Slide Library, located on the fourth floor, has more than 100,000 slides for faculty use in the classroom. Contact Wendy Hall, ext. 7121 for orientation to the collection.

Slides circulate only to faculty. They should be returned as soon as possible after class or within 24 hours as another faculty member for instruction may need them.

Slide library staff will make slides needed for instructional use, which will become part of the Library’s Slide Collection. Usually the service takes about one month.

Identification

A current Columbia College picture ID with barcode is required to borrow materials from the Columbia College Library and from the many Chicago-area libraries with which we have cooperative resource-sharing agreements.

Interlibrary Loan

Materials not available from the Columbia College Library may be obtained from other libraries via interlibrary loan services. You may also borrow materials on-site at many local libraries such as Roosevelt and DePaul Universities and the School of the Art Institute.

Remember for Course Handouts: Properly credit all sources in captions and references. Obtain written permission to use any material take from another source, unless that material is in the public domain.

Please post course book and recomened books on the IAM_Recommended_Books list.
