Sound & Motion class 5
Week 5 S&M
Grading C competent B excels in form or content A excels in both
What I look for:
Style, originality (Noah's Ark as eg.)
How does shot composition support the content ("Style", "Crayon Pirate")
Some reflections on Asn. 1
Auto controls were used most of the time
Strong color/composition shots were used w/out regard to how they fit in with preceding or succeeding shots
Some sequencing was w/out distinction and unclear, while others asked interesting questions or created effective moods.
Much revolved around the drug deal – why? Why reproduce media tropes and stereotypes?
What makes for an interesting shot? (see the readings)
- FG/MG/BG
- Appropriate shot scale (if something small is the center of attention, frame it tightly)
- Point of view – do you want to make it seem important? Neutral? So you want the god/bird’s eye view (can make it seem unimportant, or give you the feeling of surveilling something)
- What mood do you want to create
- Have you given sufficient attention to the technical aspects (focus, white balance, sufficient light to see details, where is light coming from)
- Try the shot several ways
- Do audience research – how is it received/understood (w/out your explaining it first)
in class exercise: in Classfolders, choose the most successful stair shot and talk about why.
