Set Up

The first time the webcam is plugged into a computer it will need to install drivers for the device, which will require administrative permission. Please find a lab aide or tutor if you are using one of the lab computers.

After the drivers are installed an Install Wizard will pop up to lead you through the set up process. Agree to the Terms of Service and continue the process. Once this is done, the computer must restart before you can use the webcam software.

After the computer restarts and you log back in, admin permission will be required one final time to finish setting up the software. Once that is done, you can begin to use the LifeCam software.

Using the Software

LifeCam Software

Once the LifeCam drivers and software have installed (see Set Up) and the webcam is plugged in, a window similar to the one on the right will open up. Clicking the blue arrow will open up a side menu that allows you to adjust image resolution and other advanced properties.

Before you take any photos or videos, adjust the focus by twisting the lens to the left or right.

All files are saved by default to "\\siam2\user\First.Last\My Pictures\LifeCam Files" with First.Last being replaced by your log-on for the IAM server.

Taking a video

To capture video, click the video camera icon. When recording starts, the other two icons will become grayed out and the video camera icon will be replaced by a stop button. Clicking this will finish the recording and put a preview of the video in the bottom tray.

Once the video is done recording, you will have three options available from the LifeCam software:

  • Preview (Option shows "Make a movie")
  • E-mail
  • Tag and Share

E-mail will open up the default e-mail service (usually Microsoft Outlook) and Tag and Share will open Windows Live Essentials. If Live Essentials has not been used, it will prompt you to accept the Terms of Service, which requires admin permission.

Capturing Audio

The webcam captures audio using the built in microphone the same way it does when taking video. Once the audio has been capture you can use it to "make a movie" or e-mail. The make a movie option will open the file in Windows Movie Maker or prompt you to agree to the Terms of Service for Windows Live Essential.

Taking photos

The webcam also functions as a still camera. As with audio, the "make a movie" option will open Windows Movie Maker or the Windows Live Essential prompt.

Deleting a file

Files can be moved to the trash from the LifeCam software by mousing over them and clicking the box in the top left corner with an X in it.
