Contact information

The studios are located in the 600 S Michigan Building, 15th floor. Note, there are four elevators that stop on 14th floor... you would need to use the stairs to climb the last flight, or take one of the two elevators closest to Michigan Ave to go directly to 15.

General Engineering x7408

The studio has staff and student workers based in the engineering room, room 1503. Phone number 312.369.7408 Questions about the facility should be directed to Kevin Kantorski, Chief Television Engineer.

File preparations

Your production may require displaying still images of moving video during your production. We ask that you do not show up to your class with the files in hand for a production the same day. Please allow a few hours for us to process your files and get them loaded into the system. The additional lead time is helpful if we run into technical problems (either with your files or the current class needs).

The studios in the 600 S Michigan building operate at the 720p resolution.

Still Graphics

Any still graphics that are created for use in the character generator or still store system will need to be created at a dimension of 1280px x 720px, and a resolution of 72 or 100 DPI.

Video Files

Any videos that need to be played back during a live production will need to conform to 720p resolution with a frame rate of 59.94. Our video server is currently using Apple ProRes 422 with a 145 Mbps bit rate.

We have created a preset file for the 600 S Michigan, 15th floor studios.
This file is current as of Fall 2018.
[[file: ]] Ideally, you will shoot and edit your footage in that resolution, but that if often not the case. The engineering staff does have the ability to convert / resize your video for proper playback.

Getting a copy of your production

If you would like a copy of your production, please make sure your TA is made aware that you would like a copy. Not all productions are exported / saved. The EVS recording system is not the long term storage. Typically we try to export the production the same day. Files are stored for the rest of the current semester and at least 1 additional semester. The file is a Quicktime (.mov) file, compressed using the Apple Prores codec. These are full bandwidth files. A 30 minute show is roughly 12 GB. Depending on how large and how many files you are requesting, you can either wait for the transfer or come back later or the next day. A transfer of a 30 minute drive can take 5-15 minutes depending on the drive and connection type (USB 2.0, USB 3.0, Thunderbolt, Firewire).

Your Personal Storage drive

We strongly suggest purchasing a hard drive, not a flash drive for your storage of productions. Flash media is not as robust, is easy to lose and has more transfer errors that aren't readily noticed when transferring large files. The engineering staff would happy to help set up a new drive and format it to be read/write capable from both the Apple and Windows operating systems. Just ask us. We will also place a label on your drive to help identify your drive from others.

Studio Usage

The studios are available to be used by students in television studio production and field editing classes, as well as other Cinema and Television students.
Space for these activities may be requested using the college’s online Space Scheduling system that is accessed through Oasis under the Student tab.

Rules and guidelines

If you follow these guidelines, you will keep the engineering staff happy.

Food & drinks

Keep them out of the control rooms. Drinks with lids are acceptable. Please notify engineering and assist with any clean up if there is a spill.

Lights

  • Lights are stored on the grid. If you take something down, do not leave it on the floors.
  • Each studio has a color coded clamp to keep track of which fixture belongs in which studios. Please make sure to return them to the proper studio when moving them.
  * Studio A - Red
  * Studio B - Blue
  * Studio C - Yellow
  • After you production, please remove all filters, gel, diffusion, etc.

Intercom

  • You should always act like there is an open microphone in the room. You do not want to be talking about someone else and have them overhear it while in engineering or elsewhere.
  • PROFESSIONAL TIP: Headset etiquette - Please turn your microphone before taking your headset off and tossing it on the counter or on the camera.
  • Intercom microphones should be closed when you are not talking. It raises the noise floor and makes it difficult to hear.

Prop Room

  • Your instructor and TA are not responsible for moving items around the prop you. You the students will handle that.
  • The Instructor and TA will make sure the prop room and small props are put away in organized fashion. If it is a mess after your class, prop room access will be removed next week.

Fire & Safety

  • If you need to remove items from the studio (ladders, whiteboard & audio boom), they CAN ONLY be stored in the lobby area by the old camera.
  • No items can be left in the hallway. – Fire escape access
  • Make sure to leave the area between door & window (red floor tiles) unobstructed. – Fire escape access

Broken items

  • We do not get mad when you break something, we get mad when we found something that is broken and no one told us.
  • Items are used by other classes, telling us something is broke gives us some time to get it fixed before the next class.
  • Props break, sometimes that creates a safety concern. Let your Instructor and TA know so we can pull it to be fixed.

Studio usage outside of class

  • Please check in with engineering in room 1503 when you arrive and depart. We like to confirm your reservation and sometimes have information to convey.
  • There maybe times when engineering is closed during your reservation. Please check in and out at the cage on the 1404 floor. Do not leave the studios unattended while going to get the cage staff.
  • Time in important. If you are running late or have to cancel, please call engineering or the cage to inform them.

Don't be afraid to ask

  • Something does not seem to be working
  • Something does not look right
  • Don’t know how to use something
  • Ask us before you break it
