spectacular

November 3rd, 2009 by cranehip

“Interactivity as we constructed it back in the days of early PC and console games was a very hopeful thing…but read the texts of our games, examine the roles of our player characters and see how we enact the spectacle…”

The idea that video games as a venue of the spectacle are taking over moments in our lives that would have previously been directed toward human interaction, contemplation and other heuristic things is not a new thought. I think Laurel’s nostalgia for former interactive mediums is slightly displaced. The evolution if games is almost natural. (As natural as the devlopment of technology can be versed)

It’s fair to critisize the “junk” that has infested our lives in name of the spectacle, especially from a commercial standpoint. But I think the real issue is the devotion to the spectacle, rather than the spectacle itself
