2 paid summer internships at The Field Museum

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

I have 2 paid summer internships at The Field Museum (in web development, web design, and gaming in virtual worlds) and wanted to ask if it would be possible to post advertisements for these jobs at Columbia.  I am attaching the first job ad for your information.  If you have a place where you post ads, or if you can circulate this ad to your game design students, I would really appreciate it.

The Field Museum is part of the Encyclopedia of Life, a effort to make a website for every species on earth, and we are trying to create modules on our website and also get an intern to help with a summer workshop in Teen Second Life.  We thought that Columbia would be a great source for undergraduate or graduate student interns.  If you can help us by posting the ad, we would really appreciate it.  Students can either send their resumes to me or (starting Friday) use the Field Museum’s website to apply.

thanks, in advance, for your time.

Web designer wanted

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

Two Chicago entrepreneurs who are starting their own Web business are looking for a student intern to build their Web site.  This is a tremendous opportunity for a student to sink their teeth into all aspects of a web design project and literally have their name on a professional, real-world Web site.  The intern will work with both business owners to implement a design plan and create a working Web site that will launch by the end of the summer.  We’re looking for a student with an excellent grasp of web-building skills who can work independently and creatively, who isn’t afraid to question plans and who is a quick learner.  What can we offer you?  Unfortunately, not a lot in terms of money (there will be a small amount of compensation).  We can offer plenty of real-world experience, the opportunity to work from anywhere, two laid-back co-workers, a ton of applicable web-building experience, and hopefully some fun along the way.  If interested, please contact Robert Schroeder at rschroeder1@gmail.com for more details on the internship and what the business is all about.

web-savvy student

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

Work with us in completing a web re-design project acquired recently from the American Association of University Administrators (AAUA). Student(s) can be in either junior or senior year majoring in some form of media discipline. We are open to anyone below this but we need to see the students’ portfolio online or in some form.

Our company plans to compensate to whichever student ends up being selected.  Also, the compensation will depend a) the job that will be completed, b) the strength of the student’s portfolio and c) savvy knowledge of relevant Adobe (CS) family software that will be needed to do the work.

I am not sure how soon you can get us this help. The sooner the better since we are anticipating to complete the project between June and mid-July ‘09. It is the best way I can be reached even though phone available below is fine as well.

12 hour game challenge wrap up

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

It is possible to make a ‘game’ (let’s just agree to call what we made a game) in 12 hours.

Thanks to everyone for making the first 12 hour game challenge a success. It was so successful rather than finishing early we decided to almost do the project twice.

Well anyway we didn’t quite finish with the design document but we did get something that resembles a game. I think most everyone had fun and I look forward to hosting more challenges in the future. Maybe a multi team challenge next. Or how about and alumni challenge,

You can get the ‘game’,the source, and see a bunch of pictures @

If your not quite sure what do next or COMMIT!

Jesse Labat Randall @ Envisionit Media (Last)

Hey all – long time!

So today is the last day of my internship.
We scheduled a meeting for today last week, and it was about my end date.
Basically, they like my work and feel I would be a good addition, but they dont have the budget to hire on
any new employees – who figures with the economy and all.
He said that they are at 25% of where they were last year.

I am ok with this, this internship was a great experience!
I gained a whole lot of knowledge, a great portfolio, addition to my resume, and great contacts!
I was here for a little over a 5 months, and it was all worth it.

I have graduated Columbia now and am back in the suburbs (Naperville..unfortunatly)
It was a pleasure to keep you all updated, and I hope someone learned from my experience!

Now, I’m off to take a break from school and such and take care of my parents.  I will be looking for freelance graphic design work and any source of income i can make ;p

Take care all -
