National Association for Business Economics (NABE) Foundation College Scholarship Award:

For the second year, Americans for the Arts is cosponsoring the National Association for Business Economics (NABE) Foundation College Scholarship Award: Americans for the Arts Recipient to encourage the integration of the arts into economic education.

Two $5,000 scholarships will be awarded to college level students or students entering college, who come from an economic disadvantaged household, have attended a public school, can demonstrate a long term participation in the study of, creation in and/or performance in one or more art forms, including dance, music, theatre, literary, visual/media arts), excelled academically, and have formally declared the intent to study and apply economics in their pursuit of higher education and professional career.

The final candidates will be selected by a scholarship sub-committee of the NABE Foundation Board and notified by end of September. Winner are announced publicly at the NABE Annual Meeting in October.

Real Ideas Studio program

 Real Ideas just announced that they will be going to Cannes and will have a screening during the festival.  There will be a small group of students who will have the opportunity to create a montage to open the Real Ideas Screening of 14 microgrant films from around the world that Real Ideas has been mentoring this spring.

The program is an unbelievable opportunity for student to participate in the international film festival as well as walk away with a project reel.  There are only 10 positions for students to take.  What else is also great in these economic times of uncertainty.  Real Ideas is able to have the student join them for 11 days at a very low program fee of $1600 US dollars.  Here’s the information – please forward onto students you feel would be interested in participating:

Accreditation to the Cannes Film Festival, providing access to the festival screenings and people
Entry and registration of one of your own already produced short films in the Cannes Short Film Corner
11 days shared accommodations
6 days to enjoy the festival with no filmmaking responsibilities

Invaluable networking and learning opportunities

The program will take place May 13 – May 24 in Cannes, France.  Two teams of students will create supporting material for a screening of the Real Ideas Studio Microgrant films in the Marche du Film on May 18.  Following the screening, students will have the remaining days open for networking, promoting their own films in the Short Film Corner, and just enjoying the festival and Cannes.  

Applications are being accepted through April 1. Applications will be followed up with  a telephone interview and film reel review.  A deposit of $800 is due ten days from acceptance and the remainder of $800 is due on April 20, 2009.  Transportation is not included.

Viral Video Contest

START! AND THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION

VIRAL VIDEO CONTEST

What: Start! is the American Heart Association’s national initiative that calls on all Americans and their employers to create a culture of physical activity and health to live longer, heart-healthier lives through walking. Start! is sponsored nationally by SUBWAY® Restaurants, Healthy Choice® and AstraZeneca and locally sponsored by Aetna and Schneider Electric.

Contest: The Metro-Chicago office is looking to help spread awareness and raise funds by distributing a viral video to sponsors, partners and the general public that encourages Chicagoans to be apart of the Start! movement – whether through donations or registering to participate in the Start! Heart Walk.

Guidelines: We are looking for creative content that sticks with the look and feel of our brand. Please see below for some specific content requirements:

·     1 minute or less in duration 

·     Begin and end the video with having the phrase “What if walking could save your life?”

·     Other visuals to consider when developing: feet, shoes, people walking, business atmosphere and/or outdoors.

Scholarship Description: Worldstudio AIGA Scholarships benefit minority and economically disadvantaged students who are studying the design/arts disciplines in colleges and universities in the United States.

Among the Scholarships’ primary aims are:
• to increase diversity in the creative professions, and
• to foster social and environmental responsibility in the artists, designers, and studios of tomorrow.

To this end, scholarship recipients are selected not only for their ability and their need, but also for their demonstrated commitment to giving back to the larger community through their work.

Eligibilty
• Applicants must be citizens of the United States or be in possession of a Green Card (formally known as a Permanent Resident Card or Form I-551)
• Applicants must be pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in the fine or commercial arts, design or architecture – one of the design/arts disciplines listed under “areas of study” – and plan to enter a caeer in the creative professions.
• Applicants must be matriculated (or planning to matriculate) at accredited colleges and universities in the United States for the Fall 2008/Spring 2009 academic year and intend on maintaining full-time status for the entire year.
• Incoming students who have yet to enroll must submit proof of acceptance from school of choice.
• Though not a requirement, minority status is a significant factor considered in jury decisions.
• Students must have at least a 2.0 GPA.
• Scholarships are only awarded to those students who are in financial need. Applicants must, therefore, provide complete Financial Aid information on the scholarship form and have the form signed by his/her Financial Aid Officer.

MANIFEST: Online Talent Competition

“Expose Yourself,” Columbia’s new online talent competition. The prizes will be awarded to the students who most effectively use the power of the internet to generate attention for their videos, audios and slideshows. To compete, the students have to place their work on a social web page (like flickr or You Tube, and then generate the most votes for their artistic products through two phases of online voting.
The prizes, which will likely include $3,000 in tuition credit or reimbursement, VIP weekend passes to Lollapalooza, a week long vacation for two anywhere in the world sponsored by STA Travel, or $2,000 worth of Apple products, will be awarded in the following categories:
Video $4,000 (film, video, animation, performance art, advertising promotion, public service announcements, and more);

Slideshows $2,000 (photography, illustration, sculpture, paintings, video installations, interactive multimedia presentations and time-based installations, drawings, murals, book and paper arts, architectural renderings, printmaking, fashion, textile, graphic design, typography, and graffiti)

Audio $2,000 (music performance, compositions, radio essays, dramas, etc.)
Show, Don’t Tell $2,000 (a video or audio essay showcasing a “day in the life” of Columbia’s dynamic urban campus and community in 3-min. or less). We are particularly interested in identifying students who are interested in producing these video or audio essays that reveal their own impressions about life after class at Columbia, or about our campus and community, including the depth and breath of performances and exhibitions on campus, a snapshot of our South Loop campus, or student organizations.
All entries must be submitted by Friday, March 27, 2009. A special round of student voting takes place from March 30 – April 17 to select a group of finalists. The public will then have an opportunity to vote for their top entries from April 20 – May 8 on the Columbia website. Student Web Mapping Competition

In the egalitarian spirit of the Internet, the competition will be administered entirely on-line. Entering the competition is easy. Send us an e-mail with a URL pointing to your map. By clicking the button at the bottom of this page to access the entry form.

There is no entry fee.

There are two competition categories: animated maps and interactive maps.

An interactive map offers more than just the traditional representation of spatial information; it provides tools that may be used for navigation, retrieving more information, transforming the information, and many other possibilities.

An animated map displays a sequence or a series of cartographic views of spatial information. The challenge is to convey the sense of transition and something significant about seeing the information in animated form.

Prizes
A first prize of $500 will be awarded to the best map animation and interactive map. At the discretion of the judges, additional noteworthy maps may receive an honorable mention award. All first place and honorable mention maps will receive award certificates.

Eligibility

Any student enrolled in a certificate program, undergraduate, or graduate program from North America who has not previously won first prize in either of the categories from this contest may enter.

Scholarship Opportunity- Deadline May 15, 2009

The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) will be offering up to 15 scholarships to women and minority students who plan to study in fields supporting video game development, graphic design, computer science, animation or programming, digital entertainment or software engineering.

Maximum Amount: $3,000

Application Deadline: May 15, 2009

Eligibility:

  • Minority student or a woman
  • Pursuing a degree leading to a career in video game development. Eligible majors include but are not limited to: Video Game Development or Design, Graphic design and Multimedia, Computer Animation, Computer Programming, Simulation or Digital Entertainment, Software Engineering, Computer Science and 3D Animation.
  • Full-time undergraduate student attending an accredited four-year college or university by the upcoming academic year.
  • GPA of 2.75 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

Process:
Students will have to submit their current school transcript as well as an online application form. Information about financial need, work experience, school involvement, community service activities and a short statement about the student’s educational and career goals will be needed.

Open Call for Participation: Construct Play Testing $20/hour

THE INTERACTIVE ARTS AND MEDIA DEPARTMENT

SEEKS RESEARCH SUBJECTS FOR THE FALL TO PLAY CONSTRUCT: A UNIQUE COLLABORATIVE VIDEO GAME

Each player will participate for a maximum of 6 hours of game play during 2-3 separate sessions.  Players are randomly chosen to participate in groups of 5 players per session.

Participants will need to provide date of birth, email and phone number and sign research forms for participation. Both game play and a short personality quiz will be required.

Albert P. Weisman Award

Could any of your students use funding to finish one of their projects? Please let them know about the Albert P. Weisman Award. This matching grant provides funding, up to $4000, to a limited number of undergraduate (60 credit hours or more) and graduate students in a variety of media.

The application deadline for 2009 funding is Friday, December 12. To help students prepare, we’ve scheduled four information sessions. This is the time to get questions answered about the application process and receive tips on how to submit a solid proposal for the Award.
